A jar of flower looks simple by the time it arrives — trimmed, cured, sealed, ready to go. What's easy to miss is how many distinct stages it passed through to get there, and how much any one of them can affect the final product. Here's the actual path from plant to package.

Harvest: timing is the first quality decision

Cannabis is typically harvested based on trichome development, checked under magnification for color and clarity, since that timing affects cannabinoid and terpene content at the moment of cutting. Harvest too early and the plant hasn't finished developing; too late and certain compounds start to degrade. This first decision sets a ceiling on quality that nothing downstream can fully make up for.

Drying: the first real risk point

After harvest, flower is typically dried for roughly one to two weeks in a controlled environment — dark, temperature- and humidity-regulated — until it reaches a target moisture content, often cited around 10-12%. Dry too fast and the flower can end up harsh, with poorly developed flavor; dry too slow, or in the wrong humidity, and mold becomes a real risk. This stage alone can make or break a batch that was perfectly grown.

Curing: the slow step that's easy to skip

Once dried, flower goes into sealed containers for curing — a process that can run anywhere from two weeks to well over a month, held at a target relative humidity generally in the high 50s to low 60s percent. During the early part of this stage, containers are opened regularly to release built-up moisture and refresh oxygen inside — a step commonly called burping. This is where flavor actually develops; skipping or rushing it is one of the most common ways otherwise good flower ends up mediocre.

Trimming: presentation and preservation at once

Trimming removes excess leaf material to reveal the bud itself, and how it's done matters more than it looks like it should. Hand-trimming is gentler on the trichomes that hold cannabinoids and terpenes, while machine trimming is faster but tends to knock off more of that surface material in the process. Both methods are used industry-wide, but the choice has a measurable effect on what's actually left on the bud by the time it's packaged.

Lab testing: the checkpoint that verifies everything before it

Before flower can be sold as Farm Bill-compliant hemp, it has to be tested by a third-party lab and come back under 0.3% Delta-9 THC on a dry-weight basis, per the 2018 Farm Bill's federal definition of hemp. A full Certificate of Analysis goes further than that compliance number, typically also screening for pesticides, heavy metals, microbial contaminants, and residual solvents. This is the stage where every decision made earlier in the chain — from harvest timing to trim quality — gets independently checked rather than taken on faith.

Packaging and shipping: protecting everything that came before

The last stage is sealing the flower in a way that protects it from the same things that degraded it earlier in the process — air, light, heat, and humidity swings. Fresh-sealed packaging is meant to lock in the state the flower was in at the moment of packaging, which is why how a jar or bag is sealed matters just as much during shipping as it did during curing. From here, it's a matter of getting it to your door quickly and without the temperature swings a long, slow shipping route can introduce.
